Get hooked on the new Loma Linda vegan, plant-based Tuno

Discover the latest convenience in sustainable foods! Tuno, the first plant-based tuna alternative by Loma Linda, has been creating waves with the Real Foods team this month.

It looks, feels, and acts like a can of tuna. But it isn’t. Meet the new range of vegan, gluten-free, plant-based tuna – Tuno, which has just hit Britain’s shores and the Real Foods stores.

You may not know the name, but Loma Linda has been making plant-based proteins, in Nashville, USA, since the 1890s!

Starting with some of the USA’S oldest canned vegetarian sausages, Loma Linda’s newest addition is a world’s first: the first fish alternative for sustainable eating.

Why plant-based, fish-free tuna?

With studies showing that certain species in our oceans could be extinct due to overfishing in the next ten years, this product hasn’t come fast enough.

You might remember that we covered how to avoid fish and still get vegetarian sources of omega 3 back when Blue Planet Lives hit our TV screens in May.

If you are a lover of seafood who desires a plant-based diet but can’t quite be torn away from their tuna fix then you might find some happiness with Tuno.

The added benefit is that you’ll be embracing a longer lifespan and be preventing diabetes while being planet-conscious along the way.

A selection of the Loma Linda products available from Real Foods

What is plant-based tuna?

Gluten-free and non-GMO, Tuno is made from a flaky textured soya protein and can be used exactly as you would use usual tuna but is entirely fish-free.

What’s more, there are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives in any of the products.

Unlike tuna, the smell of Tuno isn’t overly potent or fishy, so it works if you are simply seeking another plant-based protein to vary your diet.

You’ll get the benefit of seaweed powder, which is a great source of omega-3, and a lovely ocean flavour from the natural sea salt.

Tuno comes in a range of flavours, and can be served hot or cold. Each can serves two generous portions.

There’s the original Loma Linda Protein Tuno in Spring Water, or you can opt for the Loma Linda Lemon & Pepper Protein Tuno, which packs in a light peppery and tangy punch with its lemon and black pepper dressing.

We especially like the Loma Linda Sesame & Ginger Protein Tuno as it has a fantastic oriental flavour with its fiery ginger, sweet red pepper and delicate nutty sesame flavour.

It’s great for Asian rice bowl lunch and dinners, or for serving on top of rice crackers or sandwiches. Finally, there is Loma Linda Vegan Thai Sweet Chilli Protein Tuno, which we are selling wholesale by the case.

If you’ve always been a fan of tuna mayo, then you can go now opt for a fish-free, egg-free alternative of ‘Tuno & mayo’ with Loma Linda Vegan Mayonnaise Protein Tuno. This comes both in a canned or handy pouch option.

It’s so easy to include Tuno in your meals, just use it as a replacement for any recipes including tuna.

Why not try this Loma Linda classic vegan Tuno crab cakes recipe?

  • 2 cans Tuno (any flavour)
  • 1 egg or egg-replacement powder
  • ¼ cup green onions
  • ¼ cup vegan mayo

  • ½-1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • Fresh herbs to taste, preferably rosemary and thyme
  • ½ tsp lemon juice
  • Salt/pepper to taste

Heat oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Meanwhile, mix remaining ingredients for the cakes, except panko, together in a bowl until combined.

Add panko, ¼ cup at a time until mixture can be formed into patties. After patties are formed, coat each side with more panko.

Carefully, place patties in hot oil and cook til golden brown, about 1-1.5 minutes on each side.

Serve your Tuno cakes alongside your favourite mayonnaise. Serve immediately.
